Why We Drove It: The 2009 Toyota Camry receives 5 Power Circle Ratings for Predicted Reliability, among the best models on the market today. The Camry Hybrid is also one of the most fuel-efficient mid-size cars on the market.
Initial Quality – In the J.D. Power and Associates 2009 Initial Quality Study (IQS), which measures owner satisfaction with vehicle quality after the first 90 days of ownership, the Toyota Camry received 3 out of 5 Power Circle Ratings when compared to other vehicles in its class.

Performance and Design – In the J.D. Power and Associates 2009 Automotive Performance, Execution and Layout Study (APEAL), which measures owner satisfaction with performance and design attributes of a vehicle, the Toyota Camry received 3 out of 5 Power Circle Ratings when compared to other vehicles in its class.

Predicted Reliability – The current Toyota Camry was redesigned model for 2007, and has not yet been included in the J.D. Power and Associates Vehicle Dependability Study (VDS). Based on the historical performance of the Camry in the Initial Quality and Vehicle Dependability studies, the 2009 Toyota Camry receives a Predicted Reliability rating of 5 out of 5 Power Circle Ratings.

Fuel Economy – The 2009 Toyota Camry Hybrid is equipped with a gasoline/electric hybrid propulsion system. The gasoline engine is a 2.4-liter, Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder making 147 horsepower. It is assisted by a 650-volt nickel-metal hydride rechargeable battery pack connected to a permanent magnet synchronous motor with regeneration during braking. Together, this system is rated for 187 net horsepower, drives the front wheels through a continuously variable transmission, and is estimated by the EPA to achieve 33 mpg in the city and 34 mpg on the highway.

Our review vehicle averaged 33.5 mpg in mixed driving with a highway emphasis. Combined with the Camry Hybrid’s standard 17.2-gallon fuel tank, this actual fuel economy figure results in an approximate 575-mile range between fill-ups of regular unleaded.

Safety – According to the National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the 2009 Toyota Camry receives 5-star crash-test ratings for the driver and front passenger in a frontal impact, 5-star ratings for front and rear occupants in a side impact, and a 4-star rollover rating.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gives the 2009 Toyota Camry a “Good” rating in the offset frontal impact test, a “Good” rating in the side impact test, and a “Marginal” rating in the rear impact test.

Environment – According to the EPA, the 2009 Toyota Camry Hybrid consumes 10.1 barrels of petroleum annually, with a carbon footprint rating of 5.4 tons of air pollution per year. The Camry Hybrid’s national air pollution score is an 8 out of 10, and in the California and New England regions, it receives an air pollution score of 9.5 out of 10.

I totally agree with the concept of reducing gasoline consumption in cars. However, I am concerned with the battery packs that run these hybrids. What is the expected life for the batteries, and how much does a replacement cost? Is the warranty the same as for the overall car warranty? I have not seen any discussion on this subject anywhere.
