Why We Drove It: The Porsche 911 was among the three highest-ranked models in its class in the J.D. Power and Associates 2009 Vehicle Dependability Study.
Initial Quality – In the J.D. Power and Associates 2009 Initial Quality Study (IQS), the 2009 Porsche 911 did not receive an Overall Initial Quality Power Circle Rating due to low sample size.

Performance and Design – In the J.D. Power and Associates 2008 Automotive Performance, Execution and Layout Study (APEAL), the Porsche 911 did not receive an Overall Performance and Design Power Circle Rating due to low sample size.

Vehicle Dependability – In the J.D. Power and Associates 2009 Vehicle Dependability Study (VDS), the Porsche 911 received 3 out of 5 Power Circle Ratings.

Fuel Economy – The 2009 Porsche 911 Carrera is equipped with one of two engines: a 345-horsepower, 3.6-liter flat-6 engine; or a 385-horsepower, 3.8-liter flat-6 engine; each requiring premium unleaded fuel. The most fuel-efficient 911 Carrera is the standard model with the optional PDK automated, double-clutch manual transmission, which is rated to achieve 19 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway. The least fuel efficient 911 Carrera is the all-wheel-drive model equipped with either engine and a manual transmission, rated to deliver 18 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway.

Our review vehicle, a 911 Carrera S Cabriolet with the PDK automated, double-clutch manual transmission, is EPA-rated for 19 mpg city and 26 mpg highway. We averaged 17.1 mpg in mixed driving with an emphasis on quick acceleration from stops. Combined with the 911 Carrera Cabriolet’s standard 16.9-gallon fuel tank, this actual fuel economy figure results in an approximate 285-mile range between fill-ups of premium unleaded.

Safety – The Porsche 911 Carrera had not been crash tested by the National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) at the time this review was originally published.

Environment – According to the EPA, the 2009 Porsche 911 Carrera consumes between 15.6 and 17.1 barrels of petroleum annually, depending on powertrain choice. The resulting carbon footprint ratings range between 8.3 and 9.2 tons of air pollution per year.

The Porsche 911 Carrera receives national and California/New England air pollution scores of 6 out of 10 for both engines and drivetrains, with a manual transmission. The EPA does not offer air pollution scores for the 911 Carrera’s optional PDK automated, double-clutch manual transmission.
