Why We Drove It: The Mercedes-Benz GL-Class was among the top-ranked models in its class in the J.D. Power and Associates 2008 Automotive Performance, Execution, and Layout Study (APEAL).
Initial Quality – In the J.D. Power and Associates 2009 Initial Quality Study, the Mercedes-Benz GL-Class received an Overall Initial Quality Power Circle Rating of 3 out of 5.

Performance and Design – In the J.D. Power and Associates 2008 Automotive Performance, Execution and Layout Study (APEAL), the Mercedes-Benz GL-Class received an Overall Performance and Design Power Circle Rating of 4 out of 5.

Predicted Reliability – The Mercedes-Benz GL-Class was introduced for the 2007 model year, and is too new to have been included in our 2009 Vehicle Dependability Study, which measures dependability of 2006 model-year vehicles. In terms of predicted reliability, the Mercedes-Benz GL-Class receives 2.5 out of 5 Power Circle Ratings.

Fuel Economy – The 2009 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class is equipped with one of three engines: a 210-horsepower, 3.0-liter turbodiesel V-6 engine; a 335-horsepower, 4.5-liter V-8 engine; or a 382-horsepower, 5.5-liter V-8 engine, the latter two requiring premium unleaded fuel. The most fuel-efficient GL-Class is the GL320 BlueTec turbodiesel, which is rated to achieve 17 mpg in the city and 23 mpg on the highway. The popular GL450 is rated to get 13 mpg in the city and 18 mpg on the highway, while the more powerful GL550 is rated to deliver 13 mpg in the city and 17 mpg on the highway.

Our review vehicle, the GL320 4Matic with the BlueTec turbodiesel V-6 engine, is EPA-rated for 17 mpg city and 23 mpg highway. We averaged 21 mpg in mixed driving with an emphasis on highway travel. Combined with the GL320’s standard 26.4-gallon fuel tank, this actual fuel economy figure results in an approximate 550-mile range between fill-ups of ultra-low-sulfur diesel fuel or B5 biodiesel.

Safety – The Mercedes-Benz GL-Class had not been crash tested by the National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) at the time this review was originally published.

Environment – According to the EPA, the 2009 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class consumes between 20.7 and 24.5 barrels of petroleum annually, depending on engine choice. The resulting carbon footprint ratings range between 11.1 and 13.1 tons of air pollution per year.

The Mercedes-Benz GL-Class receives national air pollution scores of 6 out of 10 for all powertrain combinations. In California/New England, the GL-Class receives air pollution scores of 7 out of 10 for all powertrain combinations.
