Why We Drove It: The Mazda CX-9 ranked second among all midsize multi-activity vehicles in the J.D. Power and Associates 2008 Automotive Performance, Execution, and Layout Study (APEAL).
In surveys that J.D. Power and Associates has conducted with verified owners of the 2008 Mazda CX-9, the people that actually own and drive one told us:
“I like to ride up [high] in the seat and because of that adjustment it is very hard to get into the [CX-9] without bumping my head.”
“My husband sometimes hits his head when getting in the driver’s side.”
“When givin’ it the gas the car feels like it wants to go where it wants to go and not where I want it to go.”
“So much fun to drive.”
“Fun to drive, responsive, feel very safe.”
“The handling is excellent, especially considering it is an SUV.”
“Wish [the] rear hatchback was easier to reach and close for short people.”
“The navigation system is in the wrong place. Outside glare makes it impossible to see when the sun is shining.”
“Backup camera is hard to see – useless in daytime.”
“Navigation [screen] has a terrible glare. Cannot see it at all if sun is out.”
“MP3 will play but no display appears on the screen so you can’t choose songs using the touch screen.”
“The mileage is lower than we anticipated – short range [of] 275 miles.”
“Gas mileage has been disappointing. With current technologies, should be able to get at least 25 mpg highway.”
“Although for a two-ton vehicle the MPGs are good, they need to be better.”
“Outstanding, incredible visibility. [I] drive in major metro area with many distractions – this design is superb!”
“Nothing about this vehicle rates low. I compare it to my 2000 Mercedes ML350, but a much better value for the money.”
“The blind-spot monitoring system is the greatest thing since sliced bread.”
“Interior soils easily. Porous surfaces are hard to wipe clean.”
“There isn’t as much [interior] storage space as I would like – small console and glove box.”
“Not enough room to store maps, CDs, chargers, etc.”
“I [can] fit 5 hockey bags and 5 passengers.”
“Third-row seat…nice to have but suited for younger children, not adults.”
“Passenger comfort is excellent, third-row is most comfortable in this size SUV.”

Our previous car, a 2006 BMW X5, was a great vehicle but our 2009 CX9 is so much better!More room, better ride and handling and much more power. If I have any complaint it would be the front passenger seat is too high and will not adjust as much as it should. Super car for those looking for a crossover with many uses and loads of creature comforts.
