Why We Drove It: The Dodge Charger was ranked #2 among all large cars in the J.D. Power and Associates 2008 Automotive Performance, Execution, and Layout Study (APEAL).
Initial Quality – In the J.D. Power and Associates 2008 Initial Quality Study, the Dodge Charger received an Initial Quality Rating of 2 out of 5.

Performance and Design – In the J.D. Power and Associates 2008 Automotive Performance, Execution And Layout Study, the Dodge Charger received a Performance and Design Power Circle Rating of 4 out 5.

Predicted Reliability – The Dodge Charger is too new to have been included in our J.D. Power and Associates 2008 Vehicle Dependability Study. However, based upon the performance of all Dodge models during the past three years in both our Initial Quality and Vehicle Dependability studies, the Charger’s Predicted Reliability Power Circle Rating is 2.5 out of 5.

Fuel Economy – EPA fuel economy estimates for the 2009 Dodge Charger SRT8 are 13 mpg city/19 mpg highway. The Charger SRT8 is subject to a gas guzzler tax of $1,700 During our test driving, the Charger SRT8 averaged 14.9 mpg.

Safety – The 2009 Dodge Charger gets 5-star crash test ratings for frontal impact driver and passenger and in side impacts for rear seating positions. Front seat occupant protection is rated at 4 stars in the side-impact test. The Charger also received a 4-star rollover rating. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gives the Dodge Charger a Good rating in frontal impact tests. Chargers without optional side airbags are rated Poor; older 2006-07 models with side airbags received a Marginal rating. In rear impact tests, the Charger also receives a Marginal rating.
 
Environment – According to the EPA, the 2009 Dodge Charger SRT8 consumes 22.8 barrels of petroleum annually, resulting in a carbon footprint rating of 12.2 tons of air pollution per year. The Charger SRT8’s national and California/New England air pollution scores were not ranked by the EPA at the time of publication.
