Why We Drove It: The Chevrolet Silverado was the top-ranked large pickup in the J.D. Power and Associates 2008 Initial Quality Study, and in standard format with a V-6 engine and 2WD, is one of the most fuel-efficient large pickups on the market.
• The 2009 Chevy Silverado 1500 has a fully-boxed frame, coil-over-spring front suspension, Hotchkiss-style rear suspension with splayed shock absorbers, and power rack-and-pinion steering.

• The 2009 Chevrolet Silverado is available with a choice between five different levels of suspension tuning designed to meet a buyer’s unique ride quality, handling, towing, hauling, and four-wheeling requirements.

• The Chevrolet Silverado LTZ has a different interior than other Silverado models. GM calls the standard interior “pure pickup” while the LTZ receives a “luxury-inspired” interior from the Tahoe and Suburban SUVs.

• The Chevrolet Silverado’s “pure pickup” interior features larger controls that are easier to use while wearing gloves and includes a large-capacity double glovebox for added storage.

• Silverados equipped with a locking in-seat storage bin will find enough room to stow a laptop computer inside.

• Silverado Crew Cab models are equipped with a rear seat that can be folded up with one hand to provide additional interior cargo space.

• Silverado Extended Cab models are equipped with rear access doors that swing open 170 degrees for improved loading. The doors also include power windows that slide completely down.

• The 2009 Chevy Silverado is offered with a choice between three cargo box lengths: 5-foot 8-inch, 6-foot 6-inch, and 8-foot beds.

• Buyers can select from three different V-8 engines designed to operate on E85, an ethanol-blend that lowers emissions and increases power output but which also restricts driving range due to lower fuel economy ratings.

• Chevrolet says the Silverado delivers “segment-topping fuel economy.” The Silverado XFE is rated to get 21 mpg on the highway.

• “XFE” stands for “Xtra Fuel Economy.”

• The Active Fuel Management technology applied to the Chevy Silverado’s 5.3-liter V-8 engine is designed to shut down half the cylinders during low-load conditions to conserve fuel.

• The Chevrolet Silverado XFE has the lowest coefficient of drag of any large pickup at 0.412 cd.

• When the buyer selects a Silverado equipped with a long-box bed, the fuel tank capacity rises from 26 gallons to 34 gallons.

• Silverados can be equipped with 20-inch wheels from the factory, and a 22-inch wheel is available through the dealer.

• The minimum price to replace a P275/55R20 tire was $99 plus tax, according to a search conducted at Tire Rack on April 16, 2009.

• With 2WD, the Chevrolet Silverado’s minimum running ground clearance measures 8.4 inches (Regular Cab, standard box).

• With 4WD, the Chevrolet Silverado’s maximum running ground clearance measures 9.5 inches (Regular Cab, long box).

• Cargo bed volume for the Chevy Silverado short box measures 53.2 cubic feet.

• Cargo bed volume for the Chevy Silverado standard box measures 60.7 cubic feet.

• Cargo bed volume for the Chevy Silverado long box measures 75.5 cubic feet.

• Chevy Silverados with a 6-speed automatic transmission can be equipped with “Tap Up, Tap Down” manual shift technology to help hold a gear for hill climbing and help use engine braking to slow the vehicle on hill descents.

• With OnStar, Chevrolet Silverado owners can get regular vehicle diagnostic checks that can be displayed on the optional navigation screen or be emailed to your personal email account.

• All 2009 Chevrolet Silverado crew-cab models are made in Canada or Mexico. The only Silverados made in the U.S.A. are all regular-cab trucks and many extended-cab trucks.
