Initial Quality – In the J.D. Power and Associates 2008 Initial Quality Study, the Chevrolet Aveo ranked 7th out of 7 sub-compact vehicles.

Performance and Design – In the J.D. Power and Associates 2008 Automotive Performance, Execution And Layout Study, the Chevrolet Aveo ranked 7th out of 7 sub-compact vehicles.

Vehicle Dependability – In the J.D. Power and Associates 2008 Vehicle Dependability Study, the Chevrolet Aveo ranked 3rd out of 7 sub-compact vehicles.

Fuel Economy – EPA fuel economy estimates for the 2009 Chevrolet Aveo are 27 mpg city/34 mpg highway for models with a manual transmission, and 25 mpg city/34 mpg highway for models with an automatic transmission. During our test driving in an Aveo5 with a manual transmission, we averaged 24.9 mpg.

Safety – The 2009 Chevrolet Aveo5 gets 5-star crash test ratings for frontal impact driver and passenger, and 4-star ratings for side impact front and rear seating positions (when equipped with side-impact airbags). The Chevrolet Aveo Sedan gets a 5-star crash test rating for frontal impact for the driver, a 4-star rating for frontal impact for the front passenger, a 4-star rating for side impact for front seat occupants (when equipped with side-impact airbags), and a 3-star rating for side impact for rear seat occupants. It also received a 4-star rollover rating with FWD and with AWD.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gives the Chevrolet Aveo an Acceptable rating in frontal impact tests, a Marginal rating in side impact tests, and a Poor rating in rear impact tests.

Environment – According to the EPA, the 2009 Chevrolet Aveo5 with a manual transmission consumes 11.4 barrels of petroleum annually, resulting in a carbon footprint rating of 6.1 tons of air pollution per year. The Aveo5’s national air pollution score is a 6 out of 10, with 10 being best. In California and New England, its air pollution score is a 7.

I had one of these as a courtesy car, not bad but it had a couple of problems. The main one was the external mirror on the drivers side, it seems to have some magnification which makes it very difficult to see things coming up behind you on the drivers side and creates a huge blind spot. I found it quite dangerous. The other problem is the manual gear change, it was often difficult to get it into 5th from rth, and getting it into first was sticky sometimes too.
