Why We Drove It: The Chevrolet Aveo ranked among the Top 30 vehicles in our annual Automotive Environmental Index. Additionally, the Aveo ranks among the top of its class in dependability.
The Chevrolet Aveo is a Korea-sourced subcompact that debuted in 2004 to give General Motors a true small car in its lineup. It is manufactured in South Korea by GM-Daewoo, and comes in five-door hatchback and four-door sedan body styles. For 2009, in response to the speedy run-up in fuel prices, Pontiac is also selling a version of the Aveo5 hatchback called the G3 which has Pontiac-specific styling cues.

Here is what changed on the 2009 Chevrolet Aveo:
• More powerful standard engine
• The Aveo5 hatchback gets revised styling and a new interior
• Auxiliary input jack included for all radios
• Redesigned 15-inch alloy wheels
• Driver Information Center includes outside temperature and average fuel economy displays
• Variable intermittent wipers are standard
• A GM Oil Life Monitoring system is standard
• OnStar communications with one year of free service is standard
• XM satellite radio is a new option
• Charcoal-colored leatherette interior is available and includes a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob
• New colors include Black Granite Metallic, Blue Moon and Tahiti Green

The 2009 Chevrolet Aveo is available in LS, 1LT and 2LT trim. Choosing 1LT trim adds features such as air conditioning, floor mats, and a CD/MP3 player connected to six premium speakers. The 2LT trim package adds numerous bells and whistles like heated, power adjustable outside mirrors; fog lights; 15-inch wheels with bolt-on plastic wheelcovers; power windows and door locks; cruise control; remote keyless entry; deluxe cloth upholstery; and free XM satellite radio for three months.

The 2009 Chevrolet Aveo is powered by a 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine making 106 horsepower at 6400 rpm and 105 lb.-ft. of torque at 3800 rpm. The engine is mated to a 5-speed manual transmission. A 4-speed automatic transmission is optional.

Standard safety features on the 2009 Chevrolet Aveo include four frontal and side-impact airbags, a tire pressure monitor, and OnStar communications with one free year of service that includes operator response in the event that the Aveo’s airbags have deployed. Antilock brakes are optional when 2LT trim is selected.

Chevrolet says the Aveo competes against the Honda Fit, Hyundai Accent, Kia Rio, and Toyota Yaris.

I had one of these as a courtesy car, not bad but it had a couple of problems. The main one was the external mirror on the drivers side, it seems to have some magnification which makes it very difficult to see things coming up behind you on the drivers side and creates a huge blind spot. I found it quite dangerous. The other problem is the manual gear change, it was often difficult to get it into 5th from rth, and getting it into first was sticky sometimes too.
