Why We Drove It: The BMW 3 Series was among the top ranked models in its class in the J.D. Power and Associates 2008 Automotive Performance, Execution, and Layout Study (APEAL). It is also called a "Top Safety Pick" by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. Finally, when equipped with the available turbodiesel engine, the 3 Series is one of the most fuel-efficient models in its class.
Initial Quality – In the J.D. Power and Associates 2008 Initial Quality Study (IQS), the BMW 3 Series received 3 out of 5 Power Circle Ratings for overall initial quality.
Performance and Design – In the J.D. Power and Associates 2008 Automotive Performance, Execution and Layout Study (APEAL), the BMW 3 Series received 5 out of 5 Power Circle Ratings for overall performance and design.
Vehicle Dependability – In the J.D. Power and Associates 2009 Vehicle Dependability Study (VDS), the BMW 3 Series received 3 out of 5 Power Circle Ratings for overall vehicle dependability.
Fuel Economy – The 2009 BMW 3 Series Sedan is equipped with a choice between three six-cylinder engines that drive the rear or all four wheels through a six-speed manual or automatic transmission. According to the EPA, the BMW 3 Series Sedan is rated to get between 16 mpg in the city and 36 mpg on the highway depending on engine choice, drivetrain selection, and transmission.
Our review vehicle, a BMW 335d with the automatic, averaged 26.1 mpg in mixed driving under heavy throttle. Combined with the 335d’s standard 16.1-gallon fuel tank, this actual fuel economy figure results in an approximate 420-mile range between fill-ups of low-sulfur diesel fuel, though when driven with less verve the car should offer greater range.
Safety – According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the 2009 BMW 3 Series Sedan gets 4-star crash-test ratings for frontal impact occupant protection, 5-star crash-test ratings for side impact occupant protection, and a 4-star rollover rating with rear- or all-wheel drive.
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety calls the BMW 3 Series Sedan a “Top Safety Pick” because it has standard stability control and received a “Good” rating in the offset frontal impact crash test, a “Good” rating in the side impact crash test, and a “Good” rating for rear impact protection.
Environment – The EPA’s fuel economy website does not have any environmental data for the BMW 335d, and does not publish national or California/New England emissions data for the 335i model.
When equipped with a gasoline engine, the 2009 BMW 3 Series Sedan consumes between 15.6 barrels of petroleum and 18 barrels of petroleum annually, depending on engine choice, drivetrain selection, and transmission. The resulting carbon footprint ratings vary between 8.3 tons of air pollution and 9.6 tons of air pollution per year.
According to the EPA, the BMW 328i’s national air pollution score is 6 out of 10. In California and New England the air pollution score ranges between 7 out of 10 and, in partial-zero emission vehicle format, 9.5 out of 10.
Performance and Design – In the J.D. Power and Associates 2008 Automotive Performance, Execution and Layout Study (APEAL), the BMW 3 Series received 5 out of 5 Power Circle Ratings for overall performance and design.

After test driving this (320d), I personally feel that VW makes much better quality cars. I test drove the new VW tiguan and was amazed by the wealth of new technology for the right price. BMW is just a hype! I would certainly not pay that extra price for just that small round seal!!
