Why We Drove It: The Scion xD is rated by the EPA to be among the most fuel-efficient cars in its class.
The Scion xD is a subcompact hatchback that replaces the Scion xA as the entry-level model in this youth-oriented brand’s three-car lineup. All new for 2008, the Scion xD is known in other parts of the world as the Toyota ist with slightly modified styling. A five-door hatchback, the Scion xD features unusual styling and can be customized in numerous ways.
The 2008 Scion xD is offered in a standard level of trim and can be personalized using an extensive catalog of accessories. Standard equipment includes power windows, mirrors and locks; air conditioning; a rear window defogger; a tilt steering wheel; cruise control; and a 60/40 split-folding rear seat. The xD also has turn signals mounted in the backs of the side mirrors; intermittent wipers; and a Pioneer audio system with a CD player with six speakers, Scion sound processing, and an iPod adaptor. A wide variety of options can be added to the Scion xD. A navigation system and premium audio system are available, as well as a selection of alloy wheels and numerous parts from Toyota Racing Development.
Like other Scion models, the xD is offered in a special-edition Series Release 1.0 model during 2008. The Scion xD Series Release 1.0 includes Hot Lava paint, a DAMD body kit, a rear spoiler, unique wheel covers, and Toyota Racing Development (TRD) lowering springs. Inside, the Series Release 1.0 adds Hot Lava accents and a RAZO Release shift knob. Scion is building 2,000 numbered examples of this model.
The 2008 Scion xD is powered by a standard 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine. This engine makes 128 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 125 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,400 rpm. A standard five-speed manual transmission drives the front wheels, and a four-speed automatic is optional. Standard safety features on the 2008 Scion xD include six airbags: dual front, dual front side-impact, and side curtains with rollover protection. Additionally, the xD is equipped with antilock brakes and a first-aid kit.
J.D. Power and Associates says the 2008 Scion xD competes against other subcompact cars like the Chevrolet Aveo, Honda Fit, Hyundai Accent, Kia Rio, Nissan Versa, and Toyota Yaris.
