Why We Drove It: The Mazda MX-5 Miata received the highest ranking from consumers within the Compact Sporty Car class in the J.D. Power and Associates 2007 Initial Quality Study, and has trended exceptionally well in our firm's Vehicle Dependability Study since 2000.
The Mazda MX-5 Miata is a small sports car that was most recently redesigned for the 2006 model year. It originally debuted for the 1990 model year, sparking a revival of purpose-built, two-seat roadsters that continues to this day. The MX-5 Miata is also recognized by the Guiness Book of World Records as the best selling roadster in the world.

Here is what changed on the 2008 Mazda MX-5 Miata:
• Manual driver’s seat cushion lift feature added
• Tire pressure monitoring system is standard
• Standard six-disc CD changer for Touring and Grand Touring models
• Limited production Special Edition with Icy Blue paint and Saddle Brown leather interior

The 2008 Mazda MX-5 Miata is available in SV, Base, Touring, Sport, Grand Touring and Special Edition trim levels. Buyers also have a choice between a soft top and an optional power retractable hardtop. The Base model adds air conditioning and a leather-wrapped steering wheel to the SV version’s standard equipment list. Choosing the Touring model adds fog lights, cruise control, remote keyless entry, and a six-disc CD changer. The Sport model includes a six-speed manual transmission instead of a 5-speed, a leather-wrapped shift knob, and larger 17-inch alloy wheels. The Grand Touring features heated leather seats, a Bose audio system, and a cloth top instead of vinyl. The Special Edition includes unique Icy Blue paint with a Saddle Brown top and chrome exterior accents, Saddle Brown leather, dark silver interior decor, different wheels, and Xenon headlights.

The 2008 Mazda MX-5 Miata is powered by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine making 166 horsepower at 6700 rpm and 140 lb.-ft. of torque at 5000 rpm (with the optional 6-speed automatic, the engine is rated to make 158 horsepower). The MX-5 Miata requires premium fuel. The MX-5 Miata SV, Base and Touring models have a five-speed manual transmission, while Sport, Grand Touring and Special Edition versions are equipped with a six-speed manual. A six-speed automatic with paddle shifters is optional on most models.

Standard safety features on the 2008 Mazda MX-5 Miata include four airbags, with a deactivation switch for the front passenger airbags in the event a child must ride in that seat. Also standard is a tire pressure monitoring system and four-wheel disc antilock brakes. Traction and stability control are available on Grand Touring and standard on Special Edition models.

J.D. Power and Associates says the 2008 Mazda MX-5 competes against other compact sporty cars like the Pontiac Solstice, Saturn Sky and Volkswagen Eos.
