Why We Drove It: Owners of the Mazda CX-7 ranked it within the top 3 of all compact multi-activity vehicles in terms of performance and design.

The Mazda CX-7 is a compact crossover SUV that first debuted for the 2007 model year. Like other Mazda models, the CX-7 is designed to be a fun-to-drive alternative to other choices in the category in which it competes, and to that end it features the same turbocharged four-cylinder engine that powers the Mazdaspeed 3 hatchback. The CX-7 is available with front- or all-wheel drive, can carry up to 5 passengers or as much as 58.6 cubic feet of cargo, and can tow up to 2000 pounds.

Here is what changed on the 2008 Mazda CX-7:
• Premium fuel is no longer required, but it is recommended for maximum engine performance
• Mazda adds a standard roadside assistance program to the warranty

The 2008 Mazda CX-7 is available in Sport, Touring or Grand Touring trim levels. The Touring model includes leather interior trim, an eight-way power adjustable driver’s seat, heated front seats, and a cargo cover. The Grand Touring adds unique leather and interior trim, electroluminescent gauges with indirect blue cabin lighting, automatic climate control, Xenon headlights, fog lights, folding heated outside mirrors, and an outside temperature display.

Options for the Mazda CX-7 include all-wheel drive, a power moonroof, a Bose Centerpoint audio system with a six-disc CD changer, Sirius satellite radio, a navigation system with voice recognition and a reversing camera, a rear seat DVD entertainment system, remote engine starting, and Mazda’s keyless locking and ignition system.

The 2008 Mazda CX-7 is powered by a de-tuned version of the same 2.3-liter, turbocharged four-cylinder engine found under the hood of the performance-oriented Mazdaspeed 3. In the CX-7, this engine makes 244 horsepower at 5000 rpm and 258 lb.-ft. of torque at 2500 rpm when operated on premium fuel. The engine is connected to a six-speed automatic that drives the front or all four wheels.

Standard safety features on the 2008 Mazda CX-7 include six airbags with side curtains that include rollover protection, stability and traction control, and antilock brakes with brake assist. A reversing camera is included when the CX-7 is equipped with the optional navigation system, and a foldaway brake pedal assembly is charged with reducing leg and foot injuries in a crash.

J.D. Power and Associates says the 2008 Mazda CX-7 competes against other compact multi-activity vehicles like the Ford Escape, Honda CR-V, Hyundai Tucson, Jeep Patriot, Nissan Rogue, Saturn Vue, Subaru Forester, and Toyota RAV4.
