The Lexus IS F is a performance-tuned variant of the Lexus IS. It debuted halfway through the 2008 model year, and is fully equipped with only a few options available. With its powerful V-8 engine, unique sport-shift transmission, modified suspension, upgraded brakes, revised steering, and exterior design modifications, the Lexus IS F is built to compete against dedicated performance sedans from Europe and the U.S.

The 2008 Lexus IS F comes in one trim level with few options. A navigation system with a backup camera and Bluetooth wireless communications linking is available, as well as Intuitive Park Assist (IPA). The IPA system uses ultrasonic sensors in the front and rear bumpers detect objects close to the car and alert the driver while showing the distance between the IS F and the objects on the optional navigation screen.

Buyers can also choose a 14-speaker, Mark Levinson Premium Surround Sound audio system. It can play CDs, DVDs, and MP3/WMA-formatted CDs. When the IS F’s transmission is in Park, DVD movies can be viewed on the optional navigation screen. XM satellite radio and an iPod integration kit are available separately.

A Pre-Collision System (PCS) with Dynamic Radar Cruise Control is available. The cruise control system employs millimeter-wave radar to maintain set distances from traffic ahead, and works with the PCS to identify obstacles ahead and determine if a collision is unavoidable. In the event the PCS decides a collision is about to occur, the system preemptively tightens the seatbelts and readies the Brake Assist system so that full braking power will be applied the moment the driver depresses the brake pedal.

Standard safety features on the 2008 Lexus IS F include driver and front passenger airbags, front seat side-impact airbags, side curtain airbags for front and rear occupants, and knee airbags for front seat passengers. The IS F also includes an Adaptive Front lighting System, which swivels the bi-Xenon headlights to help the driver see around turns.

The IS F’s specially calibrated Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management (VDIM) system packages its traction and stability control features with its electronically-controlled throttle, brake-by-wire braking and Electric Power Steering systems. Thus, VDIM can automatically orchestrate the car’s numerous electronic technologies depending on driver input and response, road conditions, and other factors.

Lexus claims that the IS F was not built to compete directly with high-performance sedans from Europe and the U.S. JDPower.com compares the 2008 Lexus IS F to the Audi RS4, BMW M3, Cadillac CTS-V, and Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG.
