Why We Drove It: The Infiniti M45 was the highest ranked Midsize Premium Car (in a tie) in our Initial Quality Study.
Initial Quality – In the J.D. Power and Associates 2008 Initial Quality Study, the Infiniti M tied with the Mercedes-Benz E-Class to rank 1st out of 9 midsize premium vehicles.
Performance and Design – In the J.D. Power and Associates 2008 Automotive Performance, Execution And Layout Study, the Infiniti M ranked 4th out of 9 midsize premium vehicles.
Predicted Reliability – The current iteration of the Infiniti M is too new to have been included in our J.D. Power and Associates 2008 Vehicle Dependability Study. However, based upon the performance of all Infiniti models during the past three years in both our Initial Quality and Vehicle Dependability studies, the M’s predicted reliability score is 4.5 out of 5.
Fuel Economy – EPA fuel economy estimates for the 2008 Infiniti M35 are 27 mpg city/34 mpg highway for models with a manual transmission, and 16 mpg city/23 mpg highway. The M35x is rated 16 mpg city/22 mpg highway. The M45 is rated 16 mpg city/21 mpg highway. The M45x is rated 14 mpg city/20 mpg highway. During our test driving in a M45S, we averaged 15 mpg.
Safety – The 2008 Infiniti M has not been crash tested by the National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration, so no ratings are available. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gives the Infiniti M a Good rating in frontal impact tests, a Good rating in side impact tests, and a Poor rating in rear impact tests.
Environment – According to the EPA, the 2008 Infiniti M45 consumes 19 barrels of petroleum annually, resulting in a carbon footprint rating of 10.2 tons of air pollution per year.
