Why We Drove It: Consumers ranked the 2007 Volkswagen Eos in the top 3 within its segment for performance and design. The Eos 2.0 is also one of the most fuel efficient models in its class according to the EPA.
Initial Quality—In the J.D. Power and Associates 2007 Initial Quality Study, the Volkswagen Eos ranked 7th out of 8 compact sporty cars.

Performance and Design—In the J.D. Power and Associates 2007 Automotive Performance, Execution and Layout (APEAL) Study, the Volkswagen Eos ranked 3rd among 8 compact sporty vehicles.

Predicted Reliability—The Volkswagen Eos is too new to have been included in our J.D. Power and Associates Vehicle Dependability Study, which evaluates dependability at the 3-year mark. However, based on the performance of all Volkswagen models in both our Initial Quality and Vehicle Dependability studies, the predicted reliability score for the Eos is 2.5 out of 5.

Fuel Economy—Equipped with the 2.0-liter, turbocharged four-cylinder engine, the 2007 Volkswagen Eos is rated by the EPA to deliver between 20 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway, depending on transmission. When equipped with the 3.2-liter V-6, the rating is 19 city/26 highway. During our test drive in the V-6 model, the Eos averaged 19.9 mpg.

Safety—The Volkswagen Eos had not been crash tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) at the time this was published. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gives the 2007 Volkswagen Eos a “Good” rating in frontal and side-impact tests, but the car receives a “Marginal” rating in the rear impact test.

Environment—According to the EPA, the 2007 VW Eos with 2.0-liter, turbocharged four-cylinder engine mated with a manual transmission consumes 14.3 barrels of petroleum per year, resulting in a carbon footprint rating of 7.7 tons of CO2 output annually. With the V-6 engine, the Eos consumes 15.6 barrels annually, which results in a carbon footprint rating of 8.3 tons of CO2 output per year. The Eos has a national air pollution score of 6 out of 10, with 10 being the best. In California and New England, its air pollution score is a 7 for the four-cylinder model and a 6 for the V-6 model.

I own a 2009-- the 2.0 liter turbo 4 is the only engine choice now. It has plenty of pep and I get 27 mpg around town and 32 mpg on the highway. I've had no leaks, either-- I think VW has solved that problem.
