Why We Drove It: The Honda Odyssey was the top-ranked vehicle in its class in our APEAL Study, which measures customer satisfaction with performance and design, and the previous-generation model was among the three top-ranked models in our Vehicle Dependability Study. The 2008 Honda Odyssey is a Top Safety Pick according to the IIHS, gets impressive crashworthiness scores from the NHTSA, and is among the most fuel-efficient minivans in the eyes of the EPA.
The first Honda Odyssey was a bit of an oddity. It debuted for the 1995 model year with conventional rear doors instead of the sliding side doors common to minivans. It also had what Honda called a Magic Seat, a third-row bench seat that could be folded and tucked into the floor when it was not in use. Smaller and narrower than most of its competitors, that original Odyssey was powered by a four-cylinder engine. It did not sell in large numbers. So, for 1999, Honda redesigned the Odyssey, making it larger and more powerful, and adding sliding side doors. The Magic Seat was retained, and much ado was made about it. Sales shot through the roof. Today’s Odyssey is the third-generation model, last redesigned for 2005. And yes, it still has a Magic Seat, a design that every minivan on the market now includes.

Here is what changed on the 2007 Honda Odyssey:
• Standard tilt and telescopic steering wheel
• Standard tire pressure monitoring system
• New center pocket coin holder
• New colors: Nimbus Gray and Dark Cherry Pearl

The 2007 Honda Odyssey is sold in LX, EX, EX-L and Touring trim levels. Choosing the EX model adds power sliding side doors, a security system, Homelink universal remote, heated outside mirrors, alloy wheels, auto-off headlights, body-color exterior trim, triple zone climate control with Micron air filtration, an 8-way power driver’s seat with lumbar support, eight-passenger seating, a CD changer and two additional speakers, stereo controls on the steering wheel, a conversation mirror with sunglasses storage, and ambient console lighting. The EX-L includes leather upholstery, a power moonroof, active noise control for a quieter interior, adjustable front armrests, and cylinder deactivation technology for the engine to help save fuel when cruising on the highway.

The Odyssey Touring is fully loaded with a power tailgate, automatic headlights, front and rear parking sensors, a Michelin PAX run-flat tire system, rear automatic climate control, power adjustable pedals, a premium audio system, XM satellite radio, a rear DVD entertainment system, a programmable information display, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, a removable second-row center console, programmable power door and tailgate locks, and a Lazy Susan for the in-floor storage bin. The only option for the Touring is a touch-screen navigation system.

The navigation system is also offered on the Odyssey EX-L model, on which it includes XM satellite radio. The EX-L can also be equipped with the rear DVD entertainment system. Other options for the Honda Odyssey are offered as accessories from the dealer, ranging from alloy wheels on the LX to a second-row center console on the EX-L.

The 2007 Honda Odyssey is powered by a 3.5-liter V-6 engine making 244 horsepower at 5750 rpm and 240 lb.-ft. of torque at 5000 rpm on regular unleaded fuel. On the EX-L and Touring trim levels, the engine is equipped with Variable Cylinder Management, which shuts down half of the engine’s cylinders under low-load conditions, such as cruising on the highway. This improves fuel economy and cuts down on emissions. All Odysseys are equipped with a five-speed automatic transmission driving the front wheels.

Standard safety features on the 2007 Honda Odyssey include six airbags: dual front, dual side and side curtains with rollover sensing technology for all three rows of seats. Antilock brakes with brake assist, traction control, stability control, and a tire pressure monitoring system are standard on all models. Touring models include a Michelin PAX run-flat tire system.

J.D. Power and Associates says the Honda Odyssey competes against minivans like the Chevrolet Uplander, Dodge Grand Caravan, Ford Freestar, Nissan Quest, Toyota Sienna, and others.
