Why We Drove It: The Dodge Charger achieved a Top 3 ranking among full-size sedans in the 2007 J.D. Power and Associates APEAL Study, which measures owner satisfaction with performance and design. The Charger is also among the most fuel-efficient vehicles in its class according to the EPA, when equipped with the standard 2.7-liter V-6 engine.
The Dodge Charger is a full-size sedan that debuted in 2006, resurrecting the name of a formerly popular model that competed in the muscle car class in the 1960s, in the personal luxury car class in the 1970s, and in the small sports coupe class in the 1980s. Today’s Dodge Charger has four doors, seats five people, is loosely based on mechanicals derived from a previous version of the Mercedes-Benz E-Class, and shares its platform and powertrains with the Chrysler 300 and Dodge Magnum.
Here is what changed on the 2007 Dodge Charger:
• 2.7-liter V-6 now available on base SE model
• New all-wheel drive (AWD) option for SXT and R/T
• Navigation system optional on SXT
• Sirius satellite radio with one free year of service on R/T
• New wheels choices for SXT and R/T
• Power adjustable pedals standard on R/T
• Enhanced Convenience Group package for SXT
• Updated Road/Track Performance Group package for R/T
• Oil change alert is standard
• New low-risk deployment front airbags
• Updated roster of paint colors
The 2007 Dodge Charger is sold in SE, SXT and R/T trim levels, with AWD available on the SXT and the R/T. There is also a low-volume, high-performance model called the SRT-8, but this review will cover only the regular production Charger models. Choosing the Charger SXT adds 17-inch alloy wheels; chrome grille trim; fog lights; Boston Acoustics sound system; 8-way power driver’s seat; 60/40 split folding rear seat; leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob; illuminated visor mirrors; and satin silver dashboard trim. The SXT with AWD includes 18-inch alloy wheels, a larger fuel tank, and performance brakes in addition to the all-wheel drive powertrain. Selecting the R/T provides a V-8 engine; unique wheel design; leather upholstery; folding heated outside mirrors; Sirius satellite radio; and minor trim enhancements.
Options are packaged and dependent on which trim level is selected. SE models can be equipped with a larger V-6 engine, antilock brakes with brake assist, stability and traction control, power adjustable pedals, a power driver’s seat, side-curtain airbags, self-sealing tires, and satellite radio. The SXT is the ticket to features like leather upholstery, automatic climate control, rear seat DVD entertainment, a power sunroof, a navigation system, upgraded audio components, and heated 8-way power front seats. The R/T can be equipped with the options as the SXT plus performance packages like the Road and Track Performance Group and the Daytona R/T Package.
The 2007 Dodge Charger is powered by a choice of three engines. A 2.7-liter V-6 engine making 190 horsepower at 6400 rpm and 190 lb.-ft. of torque at 4000 rpm on regular unleaded fuel is standard on the SE. The engine is mated to a 4-speed automatic transmission and drives the Charger’s rear wheels. The SXT comes with a 3.5-liter V-6 engine making 250 horsepower at 6400 rpm and 250 lb.-ft. of torque at 3800 rpm on regular unleaded fuel. The engine is mated to a 5-speed automatic transmission with manual shift feature and drives the SXT’s rear or all four wheels. The R/T includes a 5.7-liter V-8 engine making 340 horsepower at 5000 rpm and 390 lb.-ft. of torque at 4000 rpm on regular unleaded fuel. The engine is mated to a 5-speed automatic transmission with manual shift feature and drives the R/T’s rear or all four wheels. The V-8 also includes Multi Displacement System technology, which shuts down half of the engine’s cylinders under low load conditions to conserve fuel.
Standard safety features on the 2007 Dodge Charger SE include four airbags that protect the front passengers from frontal and side impacts. Antilock brakes with brake assist, traction control, and stability control are optional on the SE – other Chargers come standard with these features. Side curtain airbags and self-sealing tires are optional on all Charger models, and the R/T has a standard tire pressure monitoring system. The Charger is also equipped with what Dodge calls an Enhanced Accident Response System, which automatically cuts fuel flow to the engine, unlocks the Charger’s doors, and illuminates the interior lights in the event of an accident.
Dodge says the Charger is designed primarily for men aged 40-59 who are looking for a bold performance sedan. J.D. Power and Associates says the Dodge Charger competes against large cars like the Chevrolet Impala, Ford Taurus, Nissan Maxima, and Toyota Avalon.

Recently aquired a 2009 Charger SXT, 3.5 Litre, totally satisfied with it's eye catching looks and performance. Best overall car I ever owned.

I love new cars, and ever since I started purchasing cars, I have never paid one off. Today, I wrote a big check, paying off the first car ever! I love this car! Everyone I hand my keys to, loves this car! My best advice is, go for the Hemi! You will not be sorry!
