2011 Chevrolet Volt
Unlike most hybrids on the road today, the 2011 Chevrolet Volt is a "plug-in" variant, meaning owners may charge the Volt's lithium-ion battery packs to increase the vehicle’s range. When the battery is discharged after approximately 25-50 miles, the vehicle's 1.4-liter gasoline engine serves as a generator to send power to the battery, which actually powers the Volt, allowing for another 200-plus miles of travel. The automaker calls it a "range extender" powerplant. According to the EPA, the sedan earns nearly 90 mpg in testing.
