Now in its second generation, the X5 added several new features to its options packages for 2009. BMW also introduced a new twin-turbo diesel model. This crossover luxury vehicle comes in a wide range of trim levels, including the xDrive35d, xDrive30i, and the xDrive48i.

The standard front seats offer 10-way power adjustments. Also available are sport seats and 20-way multi-contour Comfort Seats. The electronic iDrive display has been made more user-friendly, BMW says, with new colors and more legible typography. Dual-zone automatic climate control is standard and four-zone control is optional. The standard audio system includes 12 speakers, and features underseat subwoofers and an optimized speaker configuration. Bluetooth connectivity is available. Options include a Premium Sound package, high-definition radio, SIRIUS Satellite Radio, and a rear entertainment system. Leatherette upholstery is standard while Nevada leather and Nappa leather are options.

Second-row seats fold down, and third-row seating that folds flat into the floor is available. Safety features include anti-lock brakes, Dynamic Stability Control, and BMW’s Head Protection System.

The main news about the 2009 X5 is the xDrive35d trim level, with its diesel engine that is emissions compliant in all 50 states. It provides 265 hp and 425 lb.-ft. of torque. BMW estimates that it will deliver 19 mpg in city driving and 25 mpg on the highway. Other engines include the X5 xDrive30i’s 3.0-liter inline-6, which delivers 260 hp and 225 lb.-ft. of torque, as well as an EPA-estimated 15 mpg city, 21 mpg highway, and 18 mpg combined. Also available is the 4.8-liter V8 in the X5 xDrive48i, which delivers350 hp, 350 lb.-ft., and fuel economy of 14 mpg city, 19 mpg highway, and 16 mpg combined.

All engines employ an aluminum cylinder block, which BMW says saves weight and results in a smoother ride due to improved weight distribution. All-wheel drive is standard on all trim levels, with a six-speed automatic transmission and manual shift control. Maximum towing capacity is 6,000 lbs. BMW also notes that the X5 employs several new technologies to reduce emissions.

The 2009 BMW X5 starts around $47,100.
