2009 Dodge Challenger
Dodge unveiled the reborn Challenger in 2008 as only a high-performance SRT8 model with one powertrain: a 425-hp, 6.1-liter, Hemi V-8 engine coupled to a 5-speed automatic transmission. Only 6400 of the 2008 model were produced. In addition to the SRT8 model, the 2009 Challenger lineup gets a V-6-powered SE model and an R/T model with an updated version of Dodge’s 5.7-liter Hemi V-8. Both Hemi engines are also available with a new 6-speed manual transmission, the first manual to be paired with either of Dodge’s new-generation Hemi engines.

The 2009 Dodge Challenger SE comes with a 3.5-liter, single-overhead cam V-6 engine that makes 250 hp at 6400 rpm and 250 lb.-ft. of torque at 3800 rpm. It is mated to a 4-speed automatic transmission. The R/T model has an updated version of Dodge’s 5.7-liter overhead-valve Hemi V-8 engine. When teamed with the standard 5-speed automatic transmission with Auto Stick manual shift gate, the 5.7-liter V-8 engine produces 372 hp at 5200 rpm and 401 lb.-ft. of torque at 4400 rpm. When paired with a new optional 6-speed manual transmission, horsepower increases to 376 at 5150 rpm and torque rises to 410 lb.-ft. at 4300 rpm. Dodge says the Challenger R/T can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in under 6 seconds.

As for equipment, SE models come with cloth upholstery, a softer Touring suspension, and 17-inch wheels. The Challenger R/T gets a “Performance” suspension with firmer settings, dual exhaust, and 18-inch alloy wheels. R/Ts are available with Dodge’s Track Pak with Hill Start Assist, limited-slip differential, bright pedals, performance steering, and an “off” setting for the electronic stability control. SRT8 models carry over with their High-Performance suspension, Bilstein shocks, Brembo brakes, and 20-inch wheels, but they have less standard equipment than the limited-edition ’08s yet get a higher starting price of $39,995. Pricing for the SE starts at $21,995 and the R/T comes in at $29,995. While the 2008 Challenger SRT8 was offered in only three colors, nine colors are available for 2009. A convertible body style is also rumored to be in the works for release midyear.
