Design
As the X5 is based on the 5 Series, and the X3 shares much with the 3 Series, the X1 borrows styling cues and powerplants from the BMW 1 Series. In size, the X1 is only slightly larger than the 1 Series, although the interior has been packaged to offer a cabin size much larger than the exterior would suggest. Like the X5 and X3, the X1 will offer seating for up to 5 passengers and a large rear tailgate to access the cargo area.
Hardware
The standard powerplants are expected to mirror those on the 1 Series models. These would include the 230-hp, 3.0-liter 6-cylinder engine in the 128i and the 300-hp, twin-turbo 3.0-liter engine in the 135i. All-wheel drive will be standard on all models. Depending on market conditions, BMW may also introduce 4-cylinder and diesel powerplants in the new X1.
