2009 Dodge Durango
When the Dodge Durango first appeared in 1998, it was a smaller 5-passenger SUV based on the Dodge Dakota pickup. The second-generation model, appearing in 2004, was significantly larger and based on the new Dodge Dakota platform. It was designed to accommodate up to 8 passengers when properly configured. After a refresh in 2007, the current model is available with three different engine choices (V-6 and V-8) and rear- or 4-wheel drive. In EPA fuel economy testing, the Durango 3.7-liter V-6 2WD model earned 14 mpg city and 20 mpg highway. A hybrid model arrives in 2009 to boost city fuel economy by a reported 40 percent, and highway economy by more than 25 percent. In our 2008 Initial Quality Study (IQS), the benchmark for new-vehicle quality measured at 90 days of ownership, the Dodge Durango ranked highest in its segment. The SUV also earned an admirable “5-star” crash test score from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in their testing. The big news for 2009 is the Durango Hybrid model, powered by technology developed in conjunction with BMW, General Motors and Mercedes-Benz.
