Mercedes-Benz E-Class
Mercedes-Benz
has been making midsize sedans for more than fifty years. However, the
first “E-Class” didn’t appear until the mid-1980s when the letter “E”
was added to the model designation (in German it meant Einspritzung,
or fuel injection). The current generation E-Class was introduced in 2003, offered in both sedan and wagon
body styles that are available with either rear- or all-wheel drive. A
variety of engine choices are offered, including 6- and 8-cylinder
gasoline and 6-cylinder diesel models. The standard gasoline model is
the E350 (EPA fuel economy estimates of 17 mpg city, and 24 mpg
highway) while the E320 Bluetec is the diesel-powered E-Class (23 mpg
city and 32 mpg highway). Less frugal, but more enthusiast-oriented,
are the E550 and powerful E63 AMG models. In our 2008 Initial Quality
Study (IQS), which measures new-vehicle quality at 90 days, the E-Class
tied for the No. 1 ranking in its segment. The E-Class also ranked
among the top three models in our 2008 Automotive Performance,
Execution and Layout (APEAL) Study, designed to spotlight those models
whose owners were delighted with the design, content, layout and
performance of their automobiles. For 2009, the Mercedes-Benz E-Class
carries forward with no changes in anticipation of a completely
redesigned model for 2010.
