The midsize Lexus ES 350 is the fifth generation of this popular model from Lexus. Launched in 1989, the front-wheel-drive ES model has always shared both platform and mechanicals with the Toyota Camry. To distance itself from the Camry, the standard engine in the Lexus ES has always been a 6-cylinder, and the interior has been moved upscale and luxuriously appointed. The current model is no exception. With a 3.5-liter V-6 engine and a 6-speed automatic transmission, the Lexus ES 350 is EPA rated at 19 mpg city and 27 mpg highway. In our 2008 Vehicle Dependability Study (VDS), which measures problems experienced by original owners of 3-year-old vehicles, the Lexus ES ranked highest in its segment. In our 2008 Initial Quality Study (IQS), the industry benchmark for new-vehicle quality measured at 90 days, the Lexus ES ranked among the top three models in its segment. Last redesigned for the 2007 model year, the Lexus ES remains unchanged for 2009.
