2009 BMW 5 Series
Since 1972, the BMW 5 Series has been the focused target for the
midsize luxury sport sedan segment. Although it is not as
luxury-oriented as much of its competition, with strong powerplants
(including a V-10 in the race-bred M5 model), sporty handling
attributes, and the choice of a manual transmission (rare in this
segment), the 5 Series beckons to enthusiasts. The sedan offers rear-
or all-wheel drive and a choice of powerplants while the wagon is only
offered with all-wheel drive and a turbocharged 6-cylinder engine. The
EPA fuel economy estimates are 18 mpg city and 27 mpg highway (figures
apply to the 528i model with an automatic transmission). In our 2008
Automotive Performance, Execution and Layout (APEAL) Study,
highlighting those models whose owners were delighted with the design,
content, layout and performance of their automobiles, the BMW 5 Series
ranked highest in its segment. The 5 Series receives only minor changes
for 2009 as an all-new model is expected to debut soon.
