2009 Toyota Tacoma
Introduced more than a decade ago, the Toyota Tacoma is now in its second generation (last redesigned for 2005). The highly-configurable midsize pickup is available with three different cabs, two different beds, two different engines, and two different drivelines (2WD and 4WD). The standard engine is a 2.7-liter 4-cylinder mated to a 5-speed manual transmission (with the optional 4-speed automatic transmission, it is EPA fuel economy rated at 19 mpg city and 25 mpg highway). The optional engine is a 4.0-liter V-6 with either a 6-speed manual, or a 5-speed automatic transmission. The Toyota Tacoma earned high rankings in our studies this year. In the 2008 Initial Quality Study (IQS), the industry benchmark for new-vehicle quality measured at 90 days of ownership, the Tacoma ranked among the top three models in its segment. It also ranked among the top three models in its segment in our 2008 Vehicle Dependability Study (VDS), which measures problems experienced by original owners of 3-year-old vehicles. The Tacoma repeated the performance in our 2008 Automotive Performance, Execution and Layout (APEAL) Study, designed to measure consumer delight with the design, content, layout and performance of their new vehicles, by again ranking among the top three models in its segment. In crash testing, the Toyota Tacoma earned a “Top Safety Pick” accolade from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), and it received “5-star” crash test scores from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The 2009 Toyota Tacoma receives several changes for the new model year. These include four new exterior colors, new standard safety features, and a limited-slip differential. The interior has been updated, and the Access Cab and Double Cab will now offer backup monitors.
