2009 Ford Explorer Sport Trac
Launched in 2001 as a midsize sport utility with a pickup bed, the Ford Explorer Sport Trac is based on the Ford Explorer. Now in its second generation (last redesigned for 2007), the 4-door Sport Trac is available with two different engine choices. The standard engine is a 4.0-liter V-6 mated to a 5-speed automatic transmission. The optional engine is a 4.6-liter V-8 with a 6-speed automatic transmission. The optional engine earns EPA fuel economy ratings of 15 mpg city and 21 mpg highway (the larger V-8 engine is actually more efficient than the standard 6-cylinder). In standard trim, the Sport Trac is rear-wheel drive with Control Trac 4-wheel drive optional on both models. In our 2008 Automotive Performance, Execution and Layout (APEAL) Study, designed to measure consumer delight with the design, content, layout and performance of their new vehicles, the Ford Explorer Sport Trac ranked among the top three models in its segment. The midsize Sport Trac also earned “5-star” crash test scores from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) during testing. The Explorer Sport Trac receives standard Trailer Sway Control to help prevent yaw movement while towing and optional satellite-based Sirius Travel Link.
