2009 Volvo S40
The smallest sedan in Volvo’s lineup, the S40 was originally launched in the U.S. in 2000. The second-generation model arrived in the middle of the 2004 model year. Three different models of the S40 are available for 2009: S40 2.4i, S40 T5 R-Design, and the S40 T5 AWD R-Design. The standard model is powered by a 2.4-liter 5-cylinder engine (EPA fuel economy estimates of 18 mpg city and 26 mpg highway), while the T5 models receive a more powerful turbocharged version of this engine. All models are front-wheel drive except for the all-wheel-drive R-Design version. Owners surveyed after 90 days of ownership reported a low number of problems with their S40s, ranking the model among the top three in its segment in on our 2008 Initial Quality Study (IQS). For 2009, the Volvo S40 gets standard Bluetooth phone interface, a high-performance sound system with satellite radio, and fog lamps. The T5 model receives a new R-Design trim package. The manual transmission option has been dropped for all models.
