2009 Mercury Sable
The Mercury Sable traces its roots back to the mid-1980s. At its introduction, the Sable premiered the same groundbreaking aero design as the Ford Taurus—its mechanical sibling. After a two-year hiatus, Mercury renamed its Montego full-size sedan the Sable in 2008 and made numerous improvements at the same time. The Sable continues to share mechanicals with the Ford Taurus and offers consumers a choice between front- or all-wheel drive. All Sables for 2009 are fitted with a standard 3.5-liter V-6 engine and a 6-speed automatic transmission. This powertrain combination earned the Mercury Sable fuel economy ratings of 18 mpg city and 28 mpg highway (front-wheel drive). In our 2008 Initial Quality Study (IQS), reporting on the number of manufacturing and design defects during the first 90 days of ownership, the Mercury Sable ranked among the top three models in its segment. The Sable (as the Mercury Montego) also ranked among the top three models in its segment in our 2008 Vehicle Dependability Study (VDS), measuring problems reported by original owners of 3-year-old vehicles. On the safety front, the Mercury Sable is a “Top Safety Pick” by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), and it scored 5-star ratings in front-impact testing by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The Mercury Sable is a carryover for 2009.
