2009 Toyota Avalon
The full-size Toyota Avalon first arrived on the market as a 1995 model. Now in its third generation (last redesigned for 2005), the Avalon is the largest sedan manufactured by Toyota. There are three models available in 2009: XL, XLS and Limited. The standard engine for all models is a 3.5-liter 6-cylinder driving the front wheels through a 6-speed electronically controlled transmission. The EPA has rated the Avalon’s fuel economy as 19 mpg city and 28 mpg highway. In our 2008 Automotive Performance, Execution and Layout (APEAL) Study, designed to measure consumer delight with the design, content, layout and performance of their new vehicles, the Toyota Avalon ranked among the top three models in its segment. Additionally, the sedan earned “5-star” frontal crash test scores from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Toyota drops the Touring version for 2009. In addition, it adds “active” headrests designed to limit whiplash-type injuries in a crash, and vehicle stability control is now standard across the model range.
