Highest Ranked: 2009 GMC Yukon
Leading the large multi-activity vehicle segment in the 2009 IQS is the GMC Yukon. The Yukon is a traditional, full-size, body-on-frame SUV that was last redesigned for the 2007 model year. As is common with General Motors’ line of trucks, the Yukon is offered in many different configurations. All trim levels feature an extensive options list, 2- or 4-wheel-drive versions, long- or short-wheelbase options, a variety of powerful engine choices, and can seat up to 9 people. The standard 1500 2WD model with a 5.3-liter V-8 engine earned EPA fuel-economy estimates of 14 mpg city, and 20 mpg highway. While GM does not currently offer a diesel powerplant in the Yukon, an innovative hybrid model is available. The mileage-boosting hybrid variant combines a 6.0-liter V-8 gasoline engine with two electric motors designed to work with its 300-volt nickel-metal hydride battery. The hybrid system is credited with improving the fuel efficiency of some driving cycles by nearly 25 percent, and the EPA rates the Yukon Hybrid 2WD at 21 mpg city and 22 mpg highway.
