Midsize MAV Segment

Highest Ranked (tie): 2009 Chevrolet TrailBlazer
The Chevrolet TrailBlazer shares a three-way tie with the Ford Edge and Toyota 4Runner as the highest-ranked midsize multi-activity vehicle in the 2009 IQS. As is customary with many other traditional SUVs, the 4-door TrailBlazer is built on a body-on-frame truck platform. Initially introduced in 2002, the 2009 model is fundamentally identical to that eight-year-old model, but it has been updated several times since its introduction. While Chevrolet used to offer TrailBlazer models with different wheelbases (short and extended), the 2009 models are only offered in the regular short-wheelbase configuration with 5-passenger seating capacities. The standard engine is a 4.2-liter 6-cylinder, with a more powerful 5.3-liter 8-cylinder offered as an option. Interestingly enough, the TrailBlazer was the first SUV to ever wear an “SS” (Super Sport) badge when the TrailBlazer SS model was introduced in 2006. The SS model is fitted with a powerful 6.0-liter LS2 V-8, an engine familiar to Corvette fans. Regardless of the engine choice, the sole transmission is a 4-speed automatic. The Chevrolet TrailBlazer is scheduled to be discontinued at the end of the 2009 model year, replaced by the Chevrolet Traverse.

According to owners of the 2009 Chevrolet TrailBlazer, the top five problem areas are:

  • Excessive wind noise
  • Hatch/tailgate is hard to open or close
  • Cupholders are difficult to use
  • Hatch/tailgate squeaks or has an abnormal noise
  • Foot pedals are too close together

Highest Ranked (tie): 2009 Ford Edge
The 2009 Ford Edge is tied with the Chevrolet TrailBlazer and Toyota 4Runner in the 2009 IQS midsize MAV segment, with all three models ranking highest in the class. The Ford Edge is a 5-passenger midsize crossover SUV that is not to be confused with the comparably-sized Ford Explorer, which rides on a traditional body-on-frame truck platform. Rather, the Edge crossover is built on a unibody platform like most cars, and is a close sibling of the Lincoln MKX. The Edge’s standard and only engine is a 3.5-liter V-6 mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission. Buyers can choose between front- or all-wheel drive. Introduced as a new model for the 2007 model year, Ford has added the Edge Sport model for 2009. It comes with a body kit, integrated fog lamps and 20-inch wheels. While it won’t appeal to everyone, the automaker is also offering massive 22-inch wheels and a sport-tuned suspension as an option.

According to owners of the 2009 Ford Edge, the top five problem areas are:

  • Hands-free communication system does not recognize a command
  • Seat belt latch/release controls are difficult to understand or use
  • Noisy brakes
  • Front seat audio/entertainment system controls are difficult to use or in a poor location
  • Materials that soil or scuff easily

Highest Ranked (tie): 2009 Toyota 4Runner
Sharing honors as the highest-ranked midsize multi-activity vehicle with the Ford Edge and Chevrolet TrailBlazer in the 2009 IQS is the Toyota 4Runner. The original mid-1980s 4Runner was based on the popular Toyota pickup truck. To save on development costs, Toyota simply added a removable fiberglass top to its modified short-bed pickup and put a 6-cylinder engine under the hood. It wasn’t until 1990, when the second-generation model arrived, that the 4Runner received a full steel roof. The rugged truck-based 4Runner has proven popular over time, and the current model dates to 2003. Significantly larger than the original, today’s 4Runner offers a long list of amenities, cutting-edge technology, and even a powerful V-8 engine. While many other sport utility vehicles have been transitioning away from truck-based platforms, the Toyota 4Runner retains its traditional body-on-frame construction. Loyalists appreciate the 4Runner’s strength and durability even though the heavier-duty underpinnings compromise interior room and on-road handling. Toyota offers three models of the 4Runner: SR5, Sport Edition and Limited. The automaker offers a choice between a 4.0-liter V-6 or a 4.7-liter V-8 engine and the option of 2- or 4-wheel drive.

According to owners of the 2009 Toyota 4Runner, the top five problem areas are:

  • Foot pedals are too close together
  • Climate controls are difficult to use or see, or are in a poor location
  • Noisy brakes
  • Front seat audio/entertainment system controls are difficult to use or in a poor location
  • Fuel gauge is difficult to use or in a poor location
