Midsize Car Segment
Highest Ranked: 2009 Volkswagen Passat
The 2009 Volkswagen Passat is the most appealing midsize car according to the results of the J.D. Power and Associates 2009 APEAL Study, ranking ahead of the No. 2-ranked 2009 Mazda 6 and the No. 3-ranked 2009 Honda Accord, and retaining its top-ranked position in the category.
The Passat is sold as a sedan or station wagon equipped with a turbocharged 4-cylinder engine sending power to the front wheels through a manual or automatic transmission. EPA fuel-economy ratings range from a low of 19 mpg city to a high of 29 mpg highway. It is offered in a single trim level, and may be equipped with a navigation system, Bluetooth, iPod adapter, and rear side-impact air bags, among other features.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the Passat receives 4-star crash-test ratings for frontal impact protection, and in side-impact tests receives 5 stars for front-seat occupants and 4 stars for rear-seat occupants. The Passat also receives a 4-star rollover rating. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) calls the Passat a “Top Safety Pick.”
In the 2009 APEAL Study, the Passat performed particularly well in the Engine/Transmission, Exterior and Driving Dynamics categories. Owners say the Passat’s top three attributes are passing power at highway speeds, performance during rapid acceleration from a stop, and the ability of the seat surfaces to resist soil and lint.
