Ford Edge: Launched as a 2007 model, the Ford Edge captured top honors among midsize SUVs in the 2007 APEAL study, which measures owners’ delight with their vehicle’s performance and design. Ford’s crossover wagon also earned a “Top Safety Pick” designation by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). For 2008, Ford’s Sync hands-free, voice-controlled communications/entertainment system is available, and the optional navigation system gains voice activation. A new power liftgate is optional, and a new Limited series joins the SE and SEL models. What Ford calls “class-exclusive” 20-inch wheels now are offered. GMC Acadia: Cousin to the Buick Enclave and Saturn Outlook, the GMC Acadia ranked among the top three models in its segment in the 2007 APEAL study. For 2008, traction/stability control with rollover mitigation is standard. Available “intelligent” AWD has been enhanced, and all Acadias have XM satellite radio. A backup camera is newly available, and a new Panic Brake Assist feature has been installed. Mercury Mountaineer: Essentially an upscale edition of Ford’s Explorer, the Mercury Mountaineer is a traditional truck-based SUV. Mountaineer ranked among the top three models in its segment in the 2007 IQS, which considers both design quality and the specific number of defects and malfunctions experienced by buyers during the first 90 days of ownership. Ford calls the new capless fuel filler an industry-exclusive feature. Ford’s Sync hands-free communications/entertainment system is newly available. So are 20-inch wheels and seven new option packages.

Saturn Outlook: One of three crossover wagons introduced by General Motors for the 2007 model year, the Saturn Outlook ranked among the top three models in its segment in the 2007 APEAL study. That achievement reflects its owners’ delight with the Outlook’s performance and design. Rear parking assist and a remote starter now are available. Outlooks can have FWD or new Active On Demand AWD. XM satellite radio is newly standard, and a Panic Brake Assist feature has been added. A backup camera is included with the available navigation radio. Toyota 4Runner: Toyota’s traditional-type midsize SUV, the 4Runner scored strongly in two 2007 studies: IQS and VDS. The 4Runner ranked highest in segment in IQS, and ranked among the top three models in its segment in VDS, which evaluates the number of problems original owners reported after three years. Roll-sensing curtain air bags now are standard, protecting the first and second rows. Active front headrests are installed, and Sport Editions can get a new Urban Runner Package.

Toyota Highlander: Shoppers looking for car-like ride and handling qualities might lean toward the Toyota Highlander, which comes in both regular gas-engine form and as the Highlander Hybrid, with a gasoline/electric powertrain. Redesigned in larger and roomier form for 2008, with additional power, Highlander ranked among the top three models in its segment in the 2007 IQS. Toyota has added straight-line steering and corner braking features. Downhill Assist Control can give 4-wheel-drive Highlanders extra help off-road. The Hybrid version gets a new EV mode to run full-electric when the battery is capable of doing so.
