With more and more fuel-efficient subcompact and compact models being introduced, it is becoming increasingly difficult for larger, heavier midsize models to crack the Top 30 list from our Automotive Environmental Index (AEI). Yet, hope exists for consumers who want a fuel-efficient, environmentally friendly vehicle but need a little more room than a small car can offer. This year, the Nissan Altima Hybrid and Toyota Camry Hybrid make the AEI Top 30 list—half as many midsize models as last year.
2008 Nissan Altima Hybrid
Last year, the non-hybrid Nissan Altima Sedan made the AEI Top 30 list. For 2008, the Altima Hybrid makes the list—one of only two midsize models to do so. The Altima Sedan was redesigned for the 2007 model year, and for 2008, Nissan emphasized the car’s up-to-date technological features. Items like a pushbutton ignition and the automaker’s Intelligent Key system allow the driver to keep the key in a pocket or purse and lock, unlock and start the vehicle. The 2008 Nissan Altima Hybrid Sedan is powered by a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine rated at 158 hp and assisted by a 40-hp electric motor. Mated to a CVT, EPA fuel-economy estimates are 35 mpg city/33 mpg highway.

2008 Toyota Camry Hybrid
In addition to four trim levels of the gasoline-powered car, a Camry Hybrid sedan is available. Toyota's Hybrid Synergy Drive, similar to the system used in the Prius and Highlander, has been adapted for use in the Camry sedan. It is mated to a special version of the Camry's 2.4-liter 4-cylinder gasoline engine. By itself, the engine makes 147 hp and 138 lb.-ft. of torque, but combined with the electric motor, total horsepower is measured at 187. The battery, inverter and other components of the hybrid system have been modified for minimal impact on passenger and cargo space. EPA mileage estimates are 33 mpg city/34 mpg highway. Like many hybrids, the Camry features a continuously variable transmission that shifts without the traditional gears.
