The Volvo S40 is the Swedish automaker’s entry-level sedan. Volvo has reintroduced a manual transmission for 2010, and all-wheel drive (AWD) is available.
The base trim of the 2010 Volvo S40, the 2.4i, features 17-inch alloy wheels, automatic climate control, cruise control, fog lights, power accessories (including an 8-way power driver’s seat), Bluetooth connectivity, and an 8-speaker sound system. The upper trim, the S40 T5 R-Design, features a turbocharged engine, partial leather upholstery, and various other upgrades. The Preferred option package includes a sunroof, power passenger seat, and keyless entry and ignition. The Climate package heats the front seats and adds automatic wipers and headlight washers. The Multimedia package is available only with the T5 R-Design, and upgrades the sound system. Many other options are available as stand-alones, including full leather upholstery, 18-inch wheels, and a navigation system.
The 2010 Volvo S40’s base engine is a 168-horsepower, 2.4-liter, inline 5-cylinder power plant that delivers 20 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway, according to the EPA. It works with a 5-speed manual or an optional 5-speed automatic transmission. The T5 R-Design version of the S40 employs a turbocharged, 227-horsepower, 2.5-liter, inline 5-cylinder engine that produces 236 lb.-ft. of torque and delivers 20 mpg in the city and 31 mpg on the highway with its 6-speed manual transmission, and 21/29 with automatic transmission. An AWD version of the S40 T5 R-Design is also available.
The 2010 Volvo S40’s safety features include anti-lock disc brakes with electronic brake-force distribution, front head restraints, stability control, traction control, rollover protection, front side air bags, and side curtain air bags. A blind-spot-alert system is optional. In government crash tests, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) gave the S40 5 (out of 5) stars in all tests save for 4 stars for driver protection in its front-impact test. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gave the S40 a highest-possible “Good” rating in frontal-offset tests, and “Acceptable” in side-impact tests.
