Following the popular success of its gasoline-electric Prius, Toyota launched its first hybrid-powered sport-utility vehicle. Its 3.3-liter V-6 gasoline engine is essentially the same as in any Highlander, but retuned for hybrid use. In Toyota's Hybrid Synergy Drive system, the gasoline engine produces 208 horsepower. That output is augmented by an electric motor-generator for a total motive force equivalent to 268 horsepower. When four-wheel drive is installed a separate electric motor drives the rear wheels, and three motor-generators are installed instead of the two in front-drive models. Two trim levels, base and Limited, are offered.
