A boxy, somewhat military-looking midsize SUV, the FJ Cruiser is built for rugged use, according to Toyota. The 2010 model employs a slightly more powerful engine than in previous years, and adds a few optional off-road features. Some new color/decorative options are also available for the 2010 model year.

The 2010 Toyota FJ Cruiser is a 5-seater that employs reverse-opening rear doors. It comes in a single trim with packaged and stand-alone options. Standard features include 17-inch steel wheels, air conditioning, power windows and locks, and a 6-speaker sound system. The Convenience package of options adds power to more of the accessories and adds a rearview camera and cruise control. The All Terrain package upgrades the tires and shock absorbers and adds a locking rear differential. Other packages address the upholstery, wheels, sound system, and safety features. With the rear seats folded, the FJ Cruiser provides 67 cubic feet of cargo space, according to the manufacturer.

The 2010 Toyota FJ Cruiser’s standard power plant is a 259-horsepower, 4.0-liter V-6 engine and a 5-speed automatic transmission with either 2-wheel (2WD) or part-time 4-wheel drive (4WD), or a 6-speed manual transmission with full-time 4WD. The FJ Cruiser with 2WD delivers 17 mpg in the city and 23 mpg on the highway, according to the EPA.

Standard safety features on the 2010 Toyota FJ Cruiser include anti-lock disc brakes with electronic brake-force distribution and brake assist, stability control, traction control, active front head restraints, front air bags, front side air bags, and side curtain air bags. In government crash tests conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the FJ Cruiser received 5 (out of 5) stars for driver protection and 4 stars for passenger protection in front-impact tests, and 5 stars across the board in side-impact tests. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gave the FJ Cruiser the highest-possible “Good” ratings in frontal-offset and side-impact tests.
