Overview
All Corolla models, base CE, LE, sporty XRS, and S, come with air conditioning, AM/FM/CD stereo, power mirrors, height-adjustable driver seat, and an anti-theft engine immobilizer. CE, LE, and S models are powered by a 126-hp, 1.8L four-cylinder engine with Toyota's VVT-i (Variable Valve Timing with intelligence) system, which allows the engine to deliver more consistent power across the rev range. The benefit of this technology is improved engine responsiveness, especially with the automatic transmission. EPA fuel economy ratings are 32 mpg city/41 mpg highway with the standard five-speed manual transmission, and 30 mpg city/38 mpg highway with the optional four-speed automatic.
The Corolla offers a wide array of safety equipment, though most of it is optional. LE and S models with automatic transmissions can be ordered with Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), which helps the driver maintain directional control during emergency maneuvers or low traction conditions. VSC comes bundled with a Brake Assist system that detects emergency braking situations and applies additional braking power as needed. Side airbags for front passengers and anti-lock brakes are optional on CE, LE, and S models, and they are standard in the XRS.
With a 164-hp version of the 1.8L engine under the hood, the XRS is the hot rod of the Corolla lineup. The VVT-i system in the XRS is tuned to provide a rush of power between 6,000 and 7,800 rpm. The XRS is available exclusively with a 6-speed manual transmission and Toyota claims a 0-60 mph time of less than eight seconds. Other XRS additions include a sport-tuned suspension with a front strut brace and a rear cross brace. Inside, the XRS features deeply-bolstered sport seats, and outside, it shares its aerodynamic body kit with the Corolla S.

Corolla ranks highest in initial quality in the compact car segment in the J.D. Power and Associates 2006 Initial Quality Study.SM Corolla performs well in the audio/entertainment/navigation system, HVAC, and seats categories. Corolla performs better than segment average in the exterior, engine/transmission, HVAC, audio/entertainment/navigation system, interior, and the driving experience categories.
The Competition
The Corolla is one of 19 models competing in the Compact Conventional segment. Vehicles in this segment tend to offer a bit more space and room than those in the non-premium Basic segment, but they are still oriented towards economy and value.
According to the J.D. Power and Associates Sales Report,SM sales in this segment for calendar year 2005 were led by the Honda Civic (308,415 units), with the Toyota Corolla next on the list (244,032). The Chevrolet Cobalt tallied 212,667 sales. Other vehicles in this segment include the Ford Focus, Nissan Sentra, Hyundai Elantra, Toyota Matrix and Prius, Volkswagen Golf, Jetta and New Beetle, Saturn ION, Mazda3, Pontiac Vibe, Kia Spectra, MINI Cooper, Suzuki Forenza, Honda Insight, and the 2007 Dodge Caliber.
