Overview
Redesigned for 2007 and built on a General Motors unibody platform, the midsize Suzuki XL7 returns for 2009 with newly standard 7-passenger seating. All trim levels include a fold-flat third-row seat for extra cargo space. Suzuki has also installed a more efficient 6-speed automatic transmission in all models, and EPA fuel-economy estimates have increased by as much as 10 percent.

While the second-generation XL7, Suzuki’s largest SUV ever, shares its stretched platform with partner GM’s Pontiac Torrent and Chevy Equinox, the XL7’s styling is all its own—including a steeply-angled windshield and flared wheel wells. In addition, the GM-designed 3.6-liter V-6 engine is built by Suzuki in Japan.

A 4-wheel independent suspension is standard, with Nivomat load-leveling shock absorbers at the rear. Total cargo volume is 95.2 cubic feet. The reclining 60/40 split-folding second-row seat tumbles and folds, while the 50/50 split-folding third-row can fold flat into the floor. A fold-flat front-passenger seat allows space for longer items up to 9.5 feet in length.

Model Lineup
The 2009 Suzuki XL7 is available in Premium, Luxury and Limited models, with front- or all-wheel drive (FWD or AWD). Each has an automatic transmission, stability and traction control, 4-wheel ABS, tire-pressure monitor, and remote keyless entry. Every 2009 XL7 is equipped with power windows, locks and mirrors; tilt steering wheel; cruise control; driver information center; automatic on/off headlamps; and privacy glass. The Premium edition also includes automatic climate control; rear air conditioning; 6-speaker CD audio system; and 16-inch aluminum alloy wheels.

Luxury trim adds a leather-appointed interior; 6-way power driver’s seat; heated front seats; leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio controls; sunroof; and an in-dash, 6-disc CD changer with MP3 capability. Heated mirrors are included with AWD. Limited trim includes a DVD navigation system; remote engine start; premium Pioneer 7-speaker audio; fog lamps; chrome door handles; upgraded roof rack with silver-color rails; rear spoiler; and 17-inch chromed wheels. DVD entertainment is available in place of a sunroof.

Powertrain
Every 2009 Suzuki XL7 is powered by a 3.6-liter V-6 engine with variable valve timing (VVT) that generates 252 hp at 6400 rpm and 243 lb.-ft. of torque at 2300 rpm. A double-isolated engine cradle aims toward quieter operation, while a true dual-exhaust system gives the XL7 a sportier tone, Suzuki says. A 5-speed automatic transmission with manumatic shift mode is standard.

EPA fuel-economy estimates for the 2009 XL7 are 17 mpg city/24 mpg highway with FWD (up 10 percent) and 16 mpg city/23 mpg highway with AWD (a 5-percent increase). The XL7 can tow as much as 3500 pounds, including Suzuki’s ATVs (all-terrain vehicles) and motorcycles.

Safety
Safety features on the 2009 Suzuki XL7 include dual-stage driver and weight-sensing front passenger air bags, and side curtain air bags for all three rows of seats. Anti-lock braking with electronic brake-force distribution, traction control, and stability control with rollover sensing are standard; and Suzuki offers an available rear-vision camera.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the Suzuki XL7 received a 5-star rating for frontal and side-impact tests, and a 4-star rating for the agency’s rollover-resistance tests. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gives the XL7 a “Good” rating for frontal impacts, an “Acceptable” rating for side impacts, and a “Marginal” rating for rear impacts.

Technology
Suzuki’s available on-demand AWD system normally sends power to the front wheels. If the front wheels slip due to low traction, up to half of the engine’s available torque may automatically be delivered to the rear wheels. Suzuki also offers a rear-vision display system as an option for the XL7 Limited. When the transmission is in reverse, this system displays a view of what’s behind the rear of the vehicle on the left side of the inside mirror. A DVD navigation system with LCD display and touch screen plus voice-prompt commands is also available. So is a rear-seat DVD entertainment system with wireless headphones and dual-media capability.
