Known for its distinctive boxy design, the popularly priced Scion xB is a light-duty, front-wheel-drive, 5-passenger crossover utility vehicle that finds favor with families and young people who routinely haul their friends and/or band equipment. Its maker, Toyota, positions the Scion xB as a roomier alternative to models such as the Volkwagen Jetta or Golf, Mazda 3, and Mistubishi Lancer.

The 2010 Scion xB’s single trim level features 16-inch steel wheels; cloth upholstery; power windows, locks and mirrors; keyless entry; cruise control; air conditioning; one-piece rear liftgate; and a 6-speaker Pioneer sound system. Options are mostly added by the dealer. They include alloy wheels (16- or 17-inch), remote ignition, rear spoiler, fog lights, and an upgraded Alpine Premium audio system. With that system, a navigation system and backup camera become available. With the rear seats up, the 2010 Scion xB provides 21 cubic feet of cargo space; with the rear seats down, total cargo space is 70 cubic feet, according to the maker.

The standard power plant in the 2010 Scion xB is a 158-horsepower, 2.4-liter, inline 4-cylinder engine with a standard 5-speed manual or an optional 4-speed automatic transmission. According to EPA estimates, the 2010 Scion xB delivers 22 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway.

Standard safety features on the 2010 Scion xB include anti-lock brakes with brake assist, stability control, traction control, dual front air bags, front side air bags, and side curtain air bags. A security system is optional. In crash tests, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gave the 2010 Scion xB its highest-possible “Good” overall ratings for front-, side-, and rear-impact protection, while in government tests, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) awarded 4 out of 5 stars for driver and front-passenger protection in front- and side-impact tests, and 5 stars for rear-passenger protection in side-impact tests.

Starting MSRP for the 2010 Scion xB was $15,850.
