What’s New?
The Scion tC launched as an all-new model for 2005. For 2006, the only changes to this sports coupe are a new steering wheel with integrated audio controls and a new head unit for the audio system. Scion offers a new, optional iPod-compatible upgrade from Pioneer that integrates the popular digital music player with the vehicle’s sound system, offering title navigation, power, and display.

Overview
Scion is Toyota’s newest division, offering vehicles designed for a new and much younger generation of buyers (even though the division has found that its vehicles appeal to buyers of all ages). Scion launched in 2004 with a pair of models: the xA hatchback and xB crossover utility vehicle. For 2005, it added the tC, a sports coupe.

The tC is low and wide with a sleek coupe body shape, yet it also provides the versatility and utility of a typical hatchback, including room to carry a bicycle. The tC is what Scion calls a mono-spec vehicle, with the only factory-installed options being curtain airbags (front airbags are standard equipment). The standard equipment list includes a huge, all-glass panorama moonroof and rear seats that recline 45 degrees and can be adjusted in 10 different positions. Also standard is a 160-watt Pioneer audio system. The car features a 160-hp, 2.4L four-cylinder engine; standard four-wheel disc brakes with anti-lock; and 17-inch wheels.

Like all Scion models, the tC offers buyers the chance to personalize their vehicle with a choice of nearly 40 accessories for installation at the local dealership. A rear spoiler, 18-inch wheels and tires, and various interior components may be added to suit personal taste. For drivers who want even more sport in their tC, accessories from Toyota Racing Development (TRD) include a 19-inch wheel-and-tire package, upgraded suspension components, and a supercharger that boosts horsepower to approximately 200.

The Competition
The tC competes in the Compact Sporty segment, where high performance in a small package is the challenge.

According to the J.D. Power and Associates Sales Report,SM the tC led this segment in calendar year 2005 with 74,415 sales. Other top-sellers in this category include the Subaru Impreza (33,637 sales in 2005), Mitsubishi Lancer (27,849) and Hyundai Tiburon (20,600). Also available are the Subaru Outback Sport, Pontiac Solstice, and Mazda MX-5 Miata. Volkswagen’s new GTI and Eos convertible, as well as Saturn’s new SKY convertible, will fit into this same niche when they go on sale later in 2006.
