The front-wheel drive Vibe is equipped with a 1.8-liter, 126 hp 4-cylinder engine and standard 5-speed manual transmission, with a 4-speed automatic transmission available. A tire-pressure-monitoring system is standard, while a stability enhancement system and 4-wheel ABS are optional. The Pontiac Vibe was co-developed and shares its platform with the Toyota Matrix.

Model Lineup
For 2008, Pontiac Vibe is available as base wagon only, although packages and stand-alone options can be added to jazz it up. Standard Vibe equipment includes a 5-speed manual transmission; rear window defogger; air conditioning; AM/FM stereo with CD player and 4 speakers; front bucket seats; power outlet; tire-pressure-monitoring system; luggage rack; and fog lamps. Options include power windows and door locks; power sunroof; upgraded audio system; automatic transmission; stability enhancement system; 4-wheel ABS; and 16- or 17-inch cast aluminum wheels.

Powertrain
One engine powers the 2008 Pontiac Vibe: a 1.8-liter 4-cylinder engine with variable valve timing that delivers 126 hp at 6000 rpm and 122 lb.-ft. of torque at 4200 rpm. Power is transferred through a standard 5-speed manual transmission, while a 4-speed automatic is optional. Also available are a stability enhancement system and 4-wheel ABS. EPA fuel economy is estimated at 25 mpg city/31 mpg highway for the automatic transmission and 26 mpg city/33 mpg highway for the manual.

Safety
Vibe safety features include standard or available 4-wheel ABS; stability enhancement system; theft-deterrent alarm system; daytime running lamps; tire-pressure-monitoring system; dual-stage frontal and side-impact air bags for driver and right front passenger; head curtain air bags for front and rear outboard seating positions; 3-point safety belts; child security door locks; and Lower Anchors and Tethers for CHildren (LATCH) for child safety seats.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the 2008 Pontiac Vibe with side air bags receives a perfect 5-star rating for driver and front passenger frontal-impact testing, and a 4-star rating for front passenger and rear side-impact testing, and a 4-star rating for rollover testing. The Vibe without side air bags receives a 5-star NHTSA rating for frontal driver, a 4-star rating for front passenger, a 3-star rating for front side-impact testing and a 4-star rating for rear side tests and rollover testing.

Technology
Equipped with a standard AM/FM stereo with CD player and 4 speakers, the 2008 Pontiac Vibe offers two optional audio systems: an AM/FM stereo with 6-disc in-dash CD changer, theft-lock and programmable equalizer and Monsoon 7-speakers; or an AM/FM stereo with CD player and MP3 playback and Monsoon 7-speaker system. A power sunroof is available separately or as part of the Sun and Sound package that also includes an AM/FM stereo with CD/MP3 playback and 7-speaker Monsoon system.
