What’s New?
The highlights for the 2007 Mercury Grand Marquis include a simplified lineup with only the GS and LS trim levels available. A flex-fuel version will continue to be produced for a handful of states.

Overview
The Mercury Grand Marquis and its twin, the Ford Crown Victoria, are two of the oldest models still being produced for the U.S. market. However, the Grand Marquis continues to be a viable product for the Ford Motor Company. It remains popular among full-size sedan buyers, it’s the only standard V-8-equipped model in the segment, it’s still rear-wheel drive, it has a very large trunk, and it can seat six people in true comfort—all giving legitimacy to Ford’s decision to continue producing the Grand Marquis. It’s also the best-selling Mercury model ever, with almost 3 million units sold since 1975. Additionally, it has received 5-star frontal crash test ratings for 11 years in a row from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Although the vehicle’s exterior design received a bit of a rounding out several years ago, the Grand Marquis continues to look slightly out of place in a compact car world. But owners love them, and sales remain strong.

The new-for-2007 Palm Beach Edition comes with chrome-finish power heated exterior mirrors; 16-inch, nine-spoke chrome-aluminum wheels; and a Palm Beach logo on the instrument panel and embroidered stitching in the seatbacks. The steering wheel is leather wrapped, and unique satin appliqués around the interior finish off the design elements. Side-impact air bags are also included with the Palm Beach package. For those who like to get to the early bird dinner specials as soon as possible, a Handling Package is available, and includes 16-inch styled aluminum wheels and black sidewall tires, a 3.27:1 rear axle ratio, a rear stabilizer bar, and rear air suspension. Also included in the Handling Package, dual exhausts kick the output of the 4.6-liter V-8 from 224 to 239 hp, and torque jumps from 275 to 287 lb.-ft. However, the Handling Package cannot be combined with the Palm Beach package.

The Competition
The Mercury Grand Marquis competes in the Large Conventional segment, which consists of 14 models. Buyers in this segment look for performance, comfort, and exterior styling, according to the J.D. Power and Associates 2006 Avoider StudySM and the Escaped Shopper Study.SM

The top sellers in the segment during calendar year 2006, according to the J.D. Power and Associates Sales Report,SM were the Chevrolet Impala (289,868 units sold), Chrysler 300 (143,647), and Dodge Charger (114,201). The Mercury Grand Marquis sold 54,688 units in 2006, a decrease of 15.5 percent compared to the previous year. Other models offered in the Large Conventional segment include the Pontiac Grand Prix, Buick Lucerne, Toyota Avalon, Ford Five Hundred, and Nissan Maxima.
