A luxury rear-wheel-drive roadster with a retractable stowaway hardtop, the SLK-Class made its US debut in the late 1990s as a competitor to the BMW Z3 and the Porsche Boxster, but with more emphasis on handling than on power, according to Mercedes. Its initials stand (in German) for Sporty, Light, and Compact. The model is unchanged for 2010, but an extremely limited Diamond White Edition of the SLK300 trim has been introduced.
Trim levels for the 2010 Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class, each of which refer to their respective engines, are the SLK300, SLK350, and SLK55 AMG. Standard features on the entry-level SLK300 and on the SLK350 include a hardtop that retracts in less than 25 seconds, 17-inch wheels, leather upholstery, cruise control, Bluetooth connectivity, fog lights, and a 9-speaker sound system. The Premium 1 option package adds more remote and automatic features. The Sport package upgrades to 18-inch wheels and a sport suspension. Several other option packages are available. The Diamond White Edition includes the Sport features and adds special interior and exterior colors and upholstery stitching.
The SLK55 AMG upgrades the drivetrain and the leather upholstery, and adds the Premium 1 package as standard. The AMG Performance package includes more performance-oriented features.
The 2010 Mercedes-Benz SLK300 features a 228-horsepower, 3.0-liter V-6 engine coupled with a 6-speed manual transmission or an optional 7-speed automatic transmission. The SLK350 features a 300-horsepower, 3.5-liter V-6 engine and the 7-speed automatic transmission. The SLK55 AMG employs a 355-horsepower, 5.4-liter V-8 engine that produces 376 lb.-ft. of torque, and the 7-speed automatic transmission. EPA fuel-economy estimates for the three engines range from 14 to 19 mpg in the city, and 22 to 26 mpg on the highway.
