Mercedes-Benz calls its CLS-Class a “four-door coupé.” It’s technically a sedan, but its stance and sporty appearance mimic the look of a coupé. The CLS-Class is a high-performance luxury car that’s available with one of two V-8 engines; the larger, with the optional Performance package, enables the CLS-Class to reach a top speed of 186 mph, according to Mercedes. The 2010 model is mainly a carryover from the previous year, when it was considerably updated.
The two trim levels for the 2010 Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class are the CLS550 and the CLS63 AMG. The base CLS550 features 18-inch wheels with performance tires, adaptive air suspension, sunroof, 4-zone automatic climate control, leather upholstery, hard-drive-based navigation system, 13-speaker Harmon Kardon sound system, and a long list of power accessories. The optional Sport package upgrades the wheels, tires, and steering wheel; 19-inch wheels are also available. The Premium 1 package upgrades the headlights and seats and adds more power features. The CLS63 AMG features special brakes to go with its powerful V-8 engine, plus upgraded upholstery, AMG-tuned sport suspension, and sport front seats. Various option packages can add larger wheels, limited-slip differential, premium Bang & Olufsen surround-sound system, track-calibrated suspension settings, and many other features.
Standard on the 2010 Mercedes-Benz CLS550 is a 382-horsepower, 5.5-liter V-8 engine. The CLS63 AMG features a 507-horsepower, 6.2-liter V-8 engine, which is available without a speed limiter. Both engines work with a 7-speed automatic transmission, and rear-wheel drive. According to the EPA, the 5.5-liter engine in the 2010 Mercedes-Benz CLS550 delivers 14 mpg in the city and 21 mpg on the highway; the larger engine in the CLS63 AMG delivers 12 mpg in the city and 18 mpg on the highway.
Standard safety features on the 2010 Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class include anti-lock brakes, stability control, active front head restraints, and a full complement of air bags. Mercedes-Benz’s Pre-Safe system closes the sunroof and braces passengers if impact is imminent, the automaker claims.
