The only car available for 2010 with a rotary engine, the Mazda RX-8 is a traditional 2+2, rear-wheel-drive sports car, but also features two short, rear-hinged rear doors. The RX-8 features exterior and interior styling that is readily identifiable with the Mazda brand.

Three trim levels are available on the 2010 Mazda RX-8: Sport, Grand Touring, and R3. The Sport trim features 18-inch wheels, air conditioning, cruise control, power accessories, and a 6-speaker sound system. The Grand Touring trim adds leather upholstery, automatic Xenon headlights, fog lights, sunroof, heated power front seats, automatic climate control, keyless ignition, keyless entry, Bluetooth connectivity, and a limited-slip rear differential. A touch-screen navigation system is optional on the Grand Touring trim. The R3 is the performance-oriented trim: It employs the Sport trim plus Xenon headlights, premium audio system, and keyless ignition and entry, and it adds a firmer suspension, 19-inch wheels, sporty front seats, and a rear spoiler.

The standard power plant in the 2010 Mazda RX-8 is a 232-horsepower, 1.3-liter rotary engine that produces 159 lb.-ft. of torque. It’s coupled with a 6-speed manual transmission. With the optional 6-speed automatic transmission (which features manual paddle shifters), power drops to 212 horsepower. With manual transmission, the engine delivers 16 mpg in the city and 22 mpg on the highway, according to the EPA.

Standard safety features on the 2010 Mazda RX-8 include anti-lock disc brakes, front- and side-impact air bags, full-length side curtain air bags, and tire-pressure monitoring. Stability control is added to the Grand Touring and R3 trims. In government crash tests, the NHTSA gave the 2010 Mazda RX-8 four stars (out of five) for driver and front passenger protection in front- and side-impact tests.

Depending on the trim, starting MSRPs on the 2010 Mazda RX-8 ranged from $26,645 to $32,140.
