From the rotary engine to the reintroduction of the two-seat sports car, Mazda has always been one of the auto industry's contrarian companies. When other companies zig, it zags or, perhaps more specifically, it zooms. Its latest effort of contrarian engineering is the all-new Mazda5, a six-seat, three-row people- and cargo-hauling conveyance based on the underpinnings of its extremely popular Mazda3 compact car. While it takes some doing to see the zoom-zoom in the Mazda5's performance, the car is built for people who want to keep the zoom-zoom in their lives in the form of outdoor sports, socializing and family-raising. Mazda sees a niche for the one-of-a-kind vehicle in both young marrieds with small children and empty-nesters who will like its economy and versatility. The Mazda5 and vehicles like it that are unavailable in North America are big hits in Europe and Asia. Whether the new offering will strike a responsive chord in America remains to be seen.
