One of the longest-running nameplates still in production, the Range Rover boasts a design history that dates back to the 1950s. It has been commercially available since 1970, when it débuted as a no-frills, all-terrain vehicle, but Land Rover didn’t start selling the Range Rover officially in the United States until 1987. The Range Rover is now in its third generation, and has evolved into a luxurious 5-passenger SUV.
For 2010, the Land Rover Range Rover features a more powerful engine, as well as upgraded transmission, suspension, terrain response, and stability control systems. Adaptive cruise control and several safety features have also been added.
The base trim, HSE, includes 19-inch wheels, adjustable air suspension, a voice-activated hard-drive-based navigation system, 14-speaker surround sound system, and many other features as standard equipment. The optional Luxury Interior package upgrades the standard leather upholstery and wood trim, and adds 20-inch wheels. The Supercharged trim includes the Luxury Interior features as standard, plus Brembo brakes, adaptive suspension damping, electronically locking rear differential, and other upgrades. Available with the Supercharged trim is the Autobiography package of options, which further enhances the leather interior trim and adds a leather headliner. It also includes 4-zone climate control and a rear entertainment system, among other features.
Both the HSE and the Supercharged trims feature 5.0-liter V-8 engines coupled with 6-speed automatic transmissions and permanent 4-wheel drive. The HSE’s engine produces 375 horsepower and 375 lb.-ft. of torque; the Supercharged V-8 makes 501 horsepower and 461 lb.-ft. of torque. Both engines deliver 12 mpg in the city and 18 mpg on the highway.
Standard safety features on the 2010 Land Rover Range Rover include anti-lock disc brakes; traction, stability, and hill descent control; front-seat side air bags; side curtain air bags; driver’s knee air bag; front and rear parking sensors; and a parking assist camera.
