The Veracruz is an all-new model—a 7-passenger crossover utility vehicle intended to compete with the Mazda CX-9, Toyota Highlander, Honda Pilot, and Ford Edge. The Veracruz features a 3.8-liter V-6 backed by a new 6-speed automatic transmission and front- or all-wheel drive.

Overview
Along with the redesigned Santa Fe, Hyundai is introducing the all-new Veracruz midsize crossover SUV in 2007. Based on a stretched version of the Santa Fe, the 7-seat Veracruz features car-style unibody construction and a 4-wheel independent suspension. The Veracruz isn't just about size; Hyundai is pitching it as a luxury vehicle, with premium features such as extra sound deadening and "semi-active" electronic engine mounts—both designed to keep the cabin quiet and vibration-free.

Power for the Veracruz comes from the Azera's 3.8-liter V-6, which is mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission and features front- or all-wheel drive (AWD). The latter is an all-electronic system that shifts power from the front wheels to the rear as needed. And while there's no low range, there is a driver-selectable AWD lock mode that distributes power 50/50 front and rear.

Hyundai offers the new Veracruz in three trim levels: GLS, SE, and Limited. Safety features such as anti-lock brakes, electronic stability control, front-seat side air bags, and three-row side curtain air bags are standard across the board, as are comfort and convenience features like power windows, locks and mirrors, air conditioning, a CD/MP3 player, 17-inch alloy wheels, and a keyless entry system. The SE model adds items such as automatic headlights, self-dimming mirrors, 18-inch wheels, a power driver's seat, and more, while the top-of-the-line Limited gets automatic climate control, a premium stereo, a power-operated tailgate, and leather seats. Many of these features are available as options on lower trim levels. The Veracruz is covered by a 5-year/60,000-mile warranty with 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain coverage.

The Competition
The Hyundai Veracruz competes in the Midsize Crossover Utility Vehicle (CUV) segment, which consists of 13 models. Buyers in this segment look for comfort, reliability, and quality, according to the J.D. Power and Associates 2006 Avoider Study^SM and the Escaped Shopper Study.^SM

The top sellers in the segment during calendar year 2006, according to the J.D. Power and Associates Sales Report,^SM were the Toyota Highlander (129,794 units sold), Nissan Murano (81,362), and Chrysler Pacifica (78,243). Other models offered in the Midsize CUV segment include the Ford Freestyle, Buick Rendezvous, Subaru B9 Tribeca, and Hyundai Santa Fe. Joining the segment in 2007 are the Ford Edge, GMC Acadia, Mazda CX-9, and Saturn Outlook.
